Breaking Self-Imposed Barriers:
If you want to see a great example of the power of
individual and team goals and their ability to
transform people to their next level, don’t miss the
film, “On a Clear Day.” Set in Scotland, it focuses on
shipyard worker Frank Redmond, played by Peter
Mullan, who is laid off. Unable to define his new
identity as the “unemployed” or, as the British
say, “redundant,” Redmond drifts along with pockets
of rage and anxiety until he decides to set an almost
impossible goal at the age of fifty something --
swimming the English Channel. Not only is the feat
improbable physically, but, to compound the drama,
his youngest son drowned in the Channel many years
before as Redmond tried to save him.
The remainder of the film focuses on Redmond's
determination, discipline, and passion to defeat his
demons and transform his identity from redundant to
resilient. The victory is not his alone. His entire team
of friends and family find themselves transforming by
osmosis as well. Suddenly, one will not tolerate being
treated poorly by a vendor, another asserts himself
with a new flirtation, and Redmond's surviving son
breaks the wall of ice that has emerged between
them.
It is a great study in stretching yourself, not
tolerating mediocrity or redundancy, and continually
striving to be more than you were yesterday. It is
also the power of a team that can gather around a
focused goal and together become greater than the
sum of its parts.
Ask yourself these questions:
- When was the last time you reinvented
yourself or your business?
- When was the last time you created a BHAG (Big
Hairy Audacious Goal) stretch goal?
- When was the last time you channeled a
passionate collective focus that not only stretched
your business to exceed expectations but also
stretched the team members to exceed their
individual expectations?
- When was the last time you challenged the
assumptions that held you or your company back by
maintaining the status quo?
- When was the last time you translated your goals
into daily disciplined habits and actions and sustained
the momentum?
Whatever your English Channel is, you need to:
- Identify a stretch goal.
- Challenge the assumptions, attitude and actions
that hold you back.
- Commit yourself to a disciplined action to give
yourself the ability to achieve.
- Make the goal SMART--
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Results oriented
- Time bound
- Gather a team to help achieve the goal.
- Motivate them to stretch themselves.
- Celebrate success.

| Next Level Leadership Program |
"Executives are focusing on how to build a flexible
and responsive organization to more quickly detect
and respond to market opportunities," according to
Forbes editor John Dobosz and GartnerG2 Research
Director Neil McDonald (April 2004).
What are you doing to build your leadership
competencies?
- Are you looking for a cost effective solution to
developing management and leadership competencies?
- Do you want something that has an impact and
extends the learning into the culture of the company
and the expectations of management?
- Do you want something that is deeper than a
weekend quick fix, that sustains and implements the
learning?
- Do you want a guarantee that is based upon an
agreed measure of success that you establish?
- Do you know that to replace a key employee is
estimated to be 1% to 2.5% of company revenue or
between $10K and $100K per employee depending on
level? (source: ASTD)
- Do you know that the TRS (Total Return to
Shareholders) on training that increases
development, communication, and morale is up to
200%? (source: SHRIM)
- Do you know that research indicates that there is
an average of 5.7 ROI for coaching key employees?
(source: Manchester Group)
- Do you want to retain top talent and groom them
for the next level?
Then you want the Next Level Leadership Program.
This cutting edge program combines:
- Leadership/management training (3 workshops)
- Assessment of core competencies
- 360 assessment telling people how others see
them
- Assessment of personality style and its impact on
communication (DISC)
- Goal setting
- Individual coaching to develop and enhance
competencies, meet goals
- Group coaching to extend learning and build the
team
- 6-month, 8-month, and 12-month programs bring
your leadership to the next level
And all for less than it would cost you to send a
manager to an offsite three-day leadership program.
