Raise your hand if you felt a certain relief, if not glee,
when Bode Miller went from self-proclaimed Olympic
bad boy to self-defeating Olympic drop out.
Raise your hand if you tried to find a way to use this
hubris as a teachable moment for your managers or
children.
How is it we are willing to cheer for the defeat of our
team when it means a victory for doing things right
and doing things the right way?
In the post-Enron world, we keep scrutinizing leaders
who have a different set of rules. Whether it is Ken
Lay or Bode Miller, our tolerance for arrogance,
cowboys, self indulgency, and self aggrandizing
behavior has reached a limit. And we are still
astounded when they just don’t get it.
Arrogance, hubris, self-created rules of engagement,
and self aggrandizing don’t belong in the leadership
lexicon. It invariably leads to not only the demise of
the leader, but inevitably brings down the team and
the company with it. Standards of behavior and
integrity still belong at the top of leadership traits.
As leaders we need to be quick on the trail of
B.O.D.E. behavior which we define as:
Brazen
Ostentation that
Defeats
Excellence
It can appear in our managers, our peers, or
ourselves. It is usually followed or preceded with
assumptions and attitudes that take umbrage to
policies and procedures; brag about results before
they are in and take no prisoners along the way. It’s
their way or the highway. They are not easy to
recalibrate because they are convinced the world is
wrong and they are right; they have trouble
empathizing with people; they make their own rules
so imagining consequences is difficult; they are
eternally optimistic about results despite the level of
effort; they are not team players; they play hard and
have lots of toys. Some of the toys are actually
people.
They care more about the silos that they own than
the success of the company and its people. They can
be high performance contributors, but erode a culture
of team success.
Once you have spotted the B.O.D.E. Syndrome, there
are several ways to address it.
- First assess the advantages and
disadvantages of his/her behavior. Identify what
would it cost to retain this person; what would it
cost to terminate?
- Assess impact with either a 360 or interviews.
- Discuss with them their personal and professional
grade.
- Discuss with them the impact of their behavior on
their results, the company, and their team.
- Identify how their behavior might undermine their
ultimate goals and results.
- Identify the exact behavior attitude and results
behavior you are expecting. Bonus the intangible, not
just tangible results (e.g., morale, attention,
upstream-downstream impact, etc.).
- Reassess progress and decide next
steps.
Every industry and every company large and small
has its gold medals and its standards of excellence.
The gap between current performance and future
success can be won or lost by the B.O.D.E.
Syndrome somewhere in your company. As leaders
you have a choice of ignoring or addressing before
your team or company’s success skis or stumbles off
the slopes.

the N.O.M.A.R Syndrome?", which appeared in
Executive Excellence in Sales and Service in

before the World Series championship!) challenges
leaders to look at themselves and their executive
team, and ask the tough questions like Theo Epstein
might have to ask to select and groom a winning
team. Read the N.O.M.A.R. article (pdf format).

| Next Level Leadership Program |
"Executives are focusing on how to build a flexible
and responsive organization to more quickly detect
and respond to market opportunities," according to
Forbes editor John Dobosz and GartnerG2 Research
Director Neil McDonald (April 2004).
What are you doing to build your leadership
competencies?
- Are you looking for a cost effective solution to
developing management and leadership competencies?
- Do you want something that has an impact and
extends the learning into the culture of the company
and the expectations of management?
- Do you want something that is deeper than a
weekend quick fix, that sustains and implements the
learning?
- Do you want a guarantee that is based upon an
agreed measure of success that you establish?
- Do you know that to replace a key employee is
estimated to be 1% to 2.5% of company revenue or
between $10K and $100K per employee depending on
level? (source: ASTD)
- Do you know that the TRS (Total Return to
Shareholders) on training that increases
development, communication, and morale is up to
200%? (source: SHRIM)
- Do you know that research indicates that there is
an average of 5.7 ROI for coaching key employees?
(source: Manchester Group)
- Do you want to retain top talent and groom them
for the next level?
Then you want the Next Level Leadership Program.
This cutting edge program combines:
- Leadership/management training (3 workshops)
- Assessment of core competencies
- 360 assessment telling people how others see
them
- Assessment of personality style and its impact on
communication (DISC)
- Goal setting
- Individual coaching to develop and enhance
competencies, meet goals
- Group coaching to extend learning and build the
team
- 6-month, 8-month, and 12-month programs bring
your leadership to the next level
And all for less than it would cost you to send a
manager to an offsite three-day leadership program.
